Celtics shake up NBA draft by swapping No. 1 overall Pick with 76ers

The Boston Celtics have completely changed up this year’s NBA draft. They finalized a trade of the No. 1 overall pick to the Philadelphia 76ers for the No. 3 overall pick and a future first round pick today, June 19th. The future first round pick will either be the Los Angeles Lakers’ pick next year if it falls between 2-5 or a 2019 pick belonging to either the Kings or 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers are widely believed to be taking No. 1 prospect Markelle Fultz from the University of Washington. Fultz averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game in his freshman year.

This is all after Fultz went in to workout for the 76ers. Trade speculations began when franchise center Joel Embiid posted two tweets that showed the 76ers’ intent of trading up to land Fultz.

Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge has come under some ridicule for the move but Ainge believes he made the right decision

Fultz plays the point guard position which the Celtics already seem to be loaded at with all-star Isaiah Thomas and young talent Marcus Smart so the move makes sense, especially if Ainge was going to draft someone from another position as the first two picks are widely suspected to be point guards. The Celtics now have 5 future first-round picks.

The NBA draft is this Thursday.
